We all know who Adobe is and what their powerful After Effects software suite brings to the table. Billed as a “visual effects, motion graphics, and composition application” for videos and animations, the software is used for everything from movies to cut scenes in video games.
Sure, it’s pretty robust, but the learning curve is immense and the single-user price tag of nearly $240 per year for the lifetime of the product can add up over time. The steep learning curve mixed with a lifetime of paying hundreds of dollars per year obviously rules out most people from using it for their video and animation needs. After Effects Has A Very Specific Role
So it seems like we’ve spent this entire writeup talking trash about Adobe and their After Effects software. Keep in mind that we are simply comparing two pieces of software, one of which just happens to be much better than the other for most people out there.
Adobe has put millions upon millions of dollars into the research and development of creating a very specific piece of software for a very small select group of professionals. Film studio professionals and professional animators most certainly need After Effects, in addition to half a dozen other pieces of enterprise-level software, in order to properly render certain types of films, videos, and animations.
If you just got hired by Dreamworks to help them create the next installment in their Toy Story series then, well, CreateStudio might not be the best option for you. If, for example, you run a wedding business and want to offer your customers special video packages, then you would be a fool to choose After Effects over CreateStudio.
The point is this: Adobe After Effects is a very powerful piece of software. There’s a reason the learning curve is so steep, and there’s a reason that Adobe can literally charge you for the rest of your life for it.
The truth behind that point is that most people simply don’t need After Effects.
Using After Effects for 90% of the videos out there that most hobbyists and entrepreneurs need created would be the equivalent of saying you want a house cat and going out and getting a pet Tiger. Sure, it’s technically a cat, but it’s way more of a cat than you could ever need or want, and you need very specific training to handle this type of cat. It’s also a hard-to-maintain cat that will drain you financially.
